SUPER RARE CATALINA ISLAND ART POTTERY LOW BOWL & MATCHING TIERED STAR FLOWER FROG - LIGHT SKY BLUE IN COLOR - MARKED 'CATALINA ISLAND 703' - CIRCA 1927-1937
I recently came upon an extremely rare Catalina Island Art pottery low bowl & a matching tiered star shaped flower frog - I have handled and purchased many pieces of Catalina Island Art Pottery over the years, but this is the first tiered star flower frog & matching under bowl that I have ever seen.  They came to me together & I will sell them in the same way.
Long oval star pointed low accent & flower display bowl measures 15" long X 10-1/2" wide & 1-7/8" tall - long oval bowl is incised/marked on the base "CATALINA ISLAND 703" (see pictures)
Unique & incredibly rare tiered & star design flower frog measures 3-1/2" tall X 5-1/2" wide at the widest flared point - top diameter is 2-3/4" & base diameter is 4-1/4" - the matching star flower frog has no makers mark, but the color and glaze is a perfect match to the oval underbowl.
Catalina Island became home to "The Catalina Clay Products Company" at the end of 1927 as a support to the local economy, and a use for the Catalina Island clay deposits to make quality building bricks and roof tiles.  They also found that there was a market for a variety of pottery ceramic art pieces, decorative tiles, sculptured & utilitarian dining wares and novelties.  It was supported by the famous Wrigley family & was quite successful producing high end art pottery under the 'CATALINA ISLAND' name until the clay deposits ran out and the business was the sold in 1937.  The Gladding McBean Company purchased the equipment and molds in 1937, moved them to the mainland & manufactured a line of Catalina Pottery pieces until 1942 (the gladding mcbean pieces were marked 'Catalina Pottery USA' in ink or with a foil label)
Both pieces are in superb condition - some roughness and a couple unglazed spots on the bases from the finish process. Both pieces have had the bases smoothed with a pottery knife to assure they sit squarely - the star flower frog has a tiny glaze flake on one of the points on the second tier and an even smaller spot on one of the poits on the top tier - partially glazed over - they appear to be a part of the firing process (see the pictures to make your own assessment). No chips, cracks, flakes or damage on either of these rare and very collectible art pottery pieces.
