Description
The H. J. Heinz Company was founded near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's first product was horseradish, and by 1896 the company produced more than 60 food products. So why the "57 varieties" moniker adopted that year? It sounded good. This label was for Heinz pickles, sold by the barrel in the days before pickle bottles. One end of the barrel would sport this label and delicatessens and grocery stores would place the barrel near a cash register as they made good last second "impulse buys". The"Heinz Pickle" picture in the middle was an early company trademark to distinguish it from other, generic pickles, and the "Pure Food Product" slogan may have been borrowed from the 1906 Federal Pure Food and Drug act. Can't get any healthier than a pickle, right?
Like a lot of other fruit and vegetable labels, this one was reprinted for years. This particular label most likely dates from the 1920s or 1930s, just before Heinz moved from barrels to bottles. There is very slight edge wear and a few very small scratches, but it is otherwise in near unused mint condition. It measures 11 inches in diameter (28 cm). A perfect addition to an old country kitchen or general store. How about pantry or storage art? It will be shipped as is, but if you want it framed, let us know for an additional charge. Shipped free in the US. Check out our other advertising collectibles at www.ebay.com/str/agitpropshop.
